What will my first therapy appointment be like?

Before your first appointment

When you schedule your first appointment, you will first be asked to complete our new patient paperwork: 1) Intake Form 2) Privacy Practices and 3) Cancellation Policy.

First session

When you come into your first session, your therapist will review your intake information with you and ask clarifying questions. It should feel more like a conversation than an interview. You will be given the opportunity to talk about what you are currently facing and be asked what you need or hope to get from therapy.

From here, your therapist will continue to work through your initial assessment and set treatment goals with you. This process usually begins in the first session and can span up to three.

What then?

After your first session, every session will be different. It will follow the trajectory of your own needs and goals. The beginning, however, should feel predictable and safe.

Every appointment will start with a check-in of your current emotional state and a review of your week. You will then be asked if there is anything you need to discuss, think about, or bring up. If there is not, your therapist will guide the session based on previous discussed treatment goals and priorities.

Each session can be expected to run between 52 -55 minutes, with variations based on your therapist’s judgment.
